Weekend/Monday ramblings and rants

Well.... it was a calm weekend here in diecastland but not without events that I can type about. First off....... some know about my spraybooth..... 2 large fans mounted in the rear (almost sexual but this is a family blog, LOL). Well one of the fans is in bad shape and stops working a lot....... just worn out I would say and I have tried to find replacements here but none of the home improvement stores have them. I purchased these from Menards, which is a midwest home improvement store, and they are almost 4 years old so its time. These normally only last a couple years since they are not made to exhaust paint fumes but just your normal bathroom poop smells. Though sometimes that can cut worse than paint, LOL.

Anyway...... before Barrett Jackson one of them went out for good and my parter said he could rebuild it and the other one at the same time so he did and they both worked great until after BJ's when the one died again while clearcoating that last batch of cars. So as I was getting the 10-15 cars ready for paint Saturday I remembered I only had one fan and couldn't paint all these cars this way. Using a can of primer in the booth with one fan is fine but not painting cars.

So off to Home Depot and Lowes and the hardware store again...... and again I find nothing that's close to what I need. What gives, people here have non smelling farts and poops ? Heck my dog makes more stink then these fans can handle, ok  back to the subject on hand. I decided that I will "rebuild" these one more time.

Well rebuild really isn't the right word........ its more like clean and grease. So I take them both apart and clean and grease them.......... fix the one broken fan blade I cracked and get them back in working order. I can tell though the one spins freely and the other spins but not as good and thats the bad one. It won't last long I'm sure.

While I have the fans out its time to clean the paint room..... the booth, shelves, table, floor just a general spring cleaning. Even though I maintain it I still can't believe how dirty is it. Remember this is a 10X10 room in which I close the door while working and have both the booth exhaust fans on and the overhead fan on. Even with all that its still messy. OK....... thats done, booth is clean, fans reinstalled and now its like 5pm....... yanno.... I'm just NOT painting today so I set me sites on Sunday.

Sunday starts with a bang...... while scanning TV stations I come across Animal House... made some 30 years ago.... which I have seen some 30 times... I sit and watch the whole thing. Laughed my ass off and even after 30 years and 30 viewings it still cracks me up, John Belushi........ comic genus.

As I prep the cars for painting I notice some high and low spots on them so I have to do some quick sanding to level everything. Once done I get them lined up... 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-11-12-13-14....... and if I push it 15... whew...... no way im painting all of these today, LOL. So I pick a batch of cars, 7 to be exact and get to the paint mixing stage. OK....... Daytona is starting so I have to take a break and watch that......... pretty uneventful I must say...... back to mixing colors. First off I notice that I need to print some formulas since I don't have them all.

First off...... 59 El Camino.... Saturn Dark Blue Metallic.... yeah, that tells me nothing. I search Saturn on Duponts site for all there dark blues and come up with nothing. Mind you they are there but I need more info. Thankfully the customer sent a paint sample so its free mix time.

Next... 48 Woodie.... Live Oak Green.... so I search a site that dates all the codes for all year cars to find the original GM code. See this customer sent me a paint formula for DBU paint and not a paint code...... what I got was pretty useless but thats ok..... I can make it work. NOT........ Dupont shows no formula, thats ok I can free mix it I have good pictures showing the color.

Next... 70 AAR Cuda's (Gurney cars) Dark Blue... yeah..... from what year ? Well this customer had included a detailed package of info from the plastic model that was built like it so in detail it explains the color. The dark Blue is just like the Jaguar dark blue but with a hint of metallic. Well this is good since I have to paint a Jaguar that exact color. Whoo hooo..... I can mix one color for 2 well in this case 3 cars (2 Cudas and the Jag).  NOT!!!!

Next up... the Jaguar.....Dark Blue..... no formula found... AGAIN! You guys reading this ?? Thats 4 cars , no formulas.... ugh! But again.... the customer sent paint samples, actually he sent the page right out of the Dupont paint chip book, cool I can free mix again. This is really cool though because he sent me the dealer paint option brochure from Jaguar in 1974.

Boy how things have changed over the years. In 1974 you could get a Jaguar in 12 different colors with 14 different interior colors. I remember buying my PT Cruiser 2 years ago and there were like 6 colors and 2 interior colors. How boring today is.

So...I set out to mix the colors which is fine albeit a lot of trial and error in matching the samples but I have it so we are good to go. This along with a Black and a real pretty med Blue metallic im ready to shoot.

I get the cars lined up on there bases for painting and tach rag everything when I see some things in the El Camino I don't like and well its now about 4pm and I don't have time to fix them, re prime and sand so the Camino gets shelved. Next its off to the task of painting..... and at 7pm I exit my booth... red marks on my face from where the mask presses against it and a nice fog on the lenses of my glasses I use when painting cars. The cars, 6, all shot........ the fans, working just perfectly and the door is closed and not an oder to be smelled. Thus ends my weekend off, LOL.



OK.... little mini rant for a Monday.......on Saturday....... while looking for fans I did stop at Gamestop where the sell new and used games for Playstation and Xbox and such. So while exiting my car to go in I notice some very loud talking.... its 4 large not White people in a Chevy Aveo ?? one of those little cracker box cars. They are talking so loud you can't hear the motor GASPING at it moves there Biggest Loser size asses along. Well........ they decide to come into the game store...... aren't I the lucky guy.... but ok, heres my rant. They are all wearing Bluetooth headsets.. and they are all yelling....... ALL THE TIME....... its like they think they have to yell while wearing those so people can hear them I'm betting. Made no sense to me but thats what I deduced. Four huge people in a small store all talking so loud you could here them over the crowd at a Bears-Packers game. Ugh...... someone needs to tell them they are NOT on the phone..... idiots..... they all surround me, LOL.

OK..... I'm out and Wayne..... Hi..... and listen I just want you to know I always call you Wayne here now and not any of my so called pet names, LOL.
